Four UIC researchers recognized as AAAS fellows
Honors College Faculty Fellows Thomas Park, professor of Biological Sciences, and Maria Varelas, professor of science education, were recently elected to the American Academy for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).
Dr. Park has been recognized for his discoveries in the field of neuroscience for his work in revealing novel phenomena in the naked mole-rat related to their immunity to certain types of pain. This may lead to potential pain relief medications in the future.
Dr. Varelas has worked to identify equitable teaching practices for learners in urban settings, building partnerships with community organizations to cultivate urban science teachers and leaders.
The new fellows will be honored at the 2020 AAAS Annual Meeting in February.
