About
Dean Hernández was a first-generation college student at Boston University, where she studied Art History and Hispanic Culture and Literature. Encouraged by her professors, she went on to earn a PhD in Spanish Literature from the University of California, Irvine in 1998.
As a scholar, Dean Hernández studies early modern Spanish culture, with a special interest in women intellectuals and cultural producers. She has published extensively, including two books and several edited collections. Her research explores how historical perspectives on gender, local communities, and national identity continue to shape our understanding of the world today.
Throughout her career, Dean Hernández has been equally passionate about helping all students flourish. Dean Hernández’s extensive leadership experience includes developing academic programs and initiatives designed to promote student success inside and outside of the classroom. Her focus is on creating the conditions for students to discover their academic passions and acquire the key competencies and skills needed to thrive in the real world.
As Dean of the Honors College, she is committed to fostering a welcoming academic home where Honors Scholars feel supported by their advisors, explore diverse perspectives, are challenged to take academic risks, are inspired to expand their personal and professional horizons, and make community with fellow students. Her goal is for every Honors Scholar to develop the sense of purpose needed to engage deeply with the world around them and make a positive impact in their communities and professions.
Outside of work, Dean Hernández enjoys spending time with her husband, children, their partners, and her beagle, Beau. She loves gardening, exploring new places, and returning to Puerto Rico to visit lifelong friends and swim in the warm Caribbean Sea.
