Download iCal FileThe “Ethics In...,” program is a series of discussions of ethical issues in the professions. This semester, the Honors College is proud to host Professor Debra L. Agard (Clinical Assistant Professor & Assistant Dean in the College of Pharmacy) for a discussion of ethics as related to untreated cases of Hepatitis C.
Hepatitis C (HCV) is a virus that causes inflammation in the liver. It is estimated that approximately 3 million people have HCV in the U.S. In the ideal world, every patient should be treated for the HCV, however it may not be feasible as the cost for treatment ranges between $400-$1,100/day.
Even if patients have health insurance, it may not cover the full cost of treatment and some plans may deny treatment de-pending on the severity of disease; leaving the patient in a quandary. More recently, there has been controversy regarding patients who require orthopedic surgery, and had been denied the procedures due to having HCV.
Professor Agard will discuss the ethical ramifications of this problem in healthcare. All are invited and refreshments will be served!
