Congratulations Ella Rappel, winner of the Sister Dorothy Drobis Award

Congratulations to Ella Rappel, winner of the Sister Dorothy Drobis Award!

The Sister Dorothy Drobis Award is awarded each Spring to an outstanding student with at least junior or senior standing majoring in education who intends to teach in an urban environment.

Ella Rappel (she/her) is a senior Teaching of English major at UIC. She is interested in all things reading and writing: literature, creative writing, journalism, communications, rhetoric, you name it. Ella blends these interests into her teaching style, selecting diverse texts and developing creative assessment strategies. She believes that teaching is a vocation powered by human connection and lifelong learning, and seeks to create these connections in her classroom.

Ella’s long-term goals include developing her teaching practice, publishing her writing in a magazine, and traveling around the world. In her time at UIC, she served as editor-in-chief of Bonfire, UIC’s independent student newspaper, which inspired her senior capstone in the professional writing department. Ella worked multiple jobs in English-related fields, including three internships in professional writing, tutoring at the Writing Center, and serving as Editor and Engagement Lead at UIC’s Linguistic Justice Journal. Her work has been published in Red Shoes Review and Graphe, student-centered creative arts publications at UIC. She is a member of the Honors College and Sigma Tau Delta, the English honors society. She will graduate in May 2025.
