HON 124: POP! Art and Culture that Rocked British Society in the 1960s

What better way to spend your spring break, than in London learning about all things pop culture!

Embedded in the Spring course Honors 124, you will have the opportunity to use London as your living textbook as you visit museums and sites connected to the works discussed in class. Guest lectures from local experts and curators will complement your in-country learning.

In this course, students will learn about the far-reaching changes that swept the UK in the 1950’s and 1960’s, exploring topics such as shifting notions of class and genders; Pop Art and Op Art movements; 1960’s photography, fashion, design and film; “Swinging London;” and the music of the Beatles and Rolling Stones.

Eligibility & Application Process

Students who meet the following eligibility criteria are invited to apply to this program:

  • Have completed 1 semester (minimum of 12 credits) at UIC by the time the program begins
  • Be in good standing both academically and according to UIC’s Community Standards

*Honors College students who submit a complete application by the priority deadline of October 15th will be eligible to receive an automatic $1,500 grant from the Honors College to reduce the overall cost of the program (first-come, first-serve as funding is limited to 15 students)

Churchhill Scholarship

Provides full tuition plus living stipend, travel allowance, and potential additional research funding toward one year of graduate study in the physical or natural sciences, engineering, or mathematics at Churchill College, University of Cambridge.

  • Eligibility: Be a U.S citizen. At the final deadline, be a current senior or recent graduate between the ages of 19 and 26.

Gates Cambridge Scholarships

For outstanding students with a 3.7 GPA or higher, research, service, leadership and vision for making a difference; offers graduate study at Cambridge University for 1-4 years. UIC starts to prepare candidates in the spring for fall deadlines.

  • Eligibility: Any country but the United Kingdom (different deadline for non-U.S. citizens; seniors or recent graduates.
  • UIC Deadline: Mid-April.

Marshall Scholarships

For outstanding students with a 3.7 GPA or higher, research, service, leadership and vision for making a difference; offers graduate study at any British university for 1-2 years. UIC starts to prepare candidates in the spring for fall deadlines.

 

Mitchell Scholarships

For outstanding students with a 3.7 GPA or higher, research, service, leadership and vision for making a difference; offers graduate study at any of the 9 universities in Ireland for one year. UIC starts to prepare candidates in the spring for fall deadlines.

 

Rhodes Scholarships (U.S.)

For outstanding students with a 3.7 GPA or higher, research, service, leadership and vision for making a difference; offers graduate study at Oxford University for 1-2 years. UIC starts to prepare candidates in the spring for fall deadlines.

  • Eligibility: U.S. citizens; seniors or recent graduates (*NOTE: As of 2018, citizens of all nations may compete for the Rhodes, as long as they meet the criteria and the eligibility appropriate to their country of. Other nations have different deadlines).

Critical Languages Scholarship

For overseas summer intensive study of critical languages abroad. Funding includes airfare and housing. Locations of summer programs vary.

  • Eligibility: U.S. citizen; undergraduates, professional and graduate students, must have completed a full year of college by the start of the program.
